EMUI 11 phones will be able to upgrade to Harmony OS

Harmony OS

Huawei has revealed that EMUI 11 devices will be eligible to upgrade to Harmony OS.

There is no information about specific devices that will be updated right now.

Huawei unveiled Harmony OS 2.0 yesterday, marking the second iteration of the local operating system. The company also said that it plans to launch smartphones with the new platform in 2021.

Now, a Huawei representative has assured Android Authority that you don't necessarily have to buy a new smartphone to experience Harmony OS when it comes to mobile devices.

"Yes, devices running the new EMUI 11 based on distributed technology will be eligible for an upgrade to Harmony OS in the future," the representative said via email.

It is not clear if the update to Harmony OS will be available for all devices running EMUI 11 or whether Huawei will only offer the update for specific devices running the new Android system. Additionally, it's not clear if this is a mandatory change or an optional update. However, it is an interesting proposition and could be an interesting alternative platform for non-Google devices, such as the Mate 30 series and P40.

We haven't seen Harmony OS 2.0 on a smartphone yet, so we're not sure what to expect. However, the company has already boosted integration between devices and data transmission, smarter speech recognition and improved security.

Would you upgrade your Huawei phone to Harmony OS if you had the option?
